A mission trip to a third world country can be a very powerful life experience! Your outlook on life will change to include a global persepective of solidarity and social justice. The true impact of mission is the people you meet and the imprint that they leave on your heart.
A big part of the formation of our beliefs in guiding mission is the understanding of the seven themes of Catholic Social Teaching. They all have or should have an important impact on how we live our lives. The one theme that stands out for us on mission and supports the guiding principles of our groups is that of solidarity. Basically, solidarity means that we believe that every human is created by the same God and that ultimately we are all brothers and sisters in Christ, we are all connected.
Our mission of love and service puts solidarity into practice. When we spend time with the marginalized, we do it as a friend -to-friend, on the same level. Our mission is a bit unique in that we are not there as a service provider where we have something they need and are providing some service or goods. We are there to share in their lives and to develop and maintain relationships. Together, we become community and family. This is truly what solidarity is all about, we are all one family in Christ.
