Why should I celebrate Divine Mercy Sunday?
Our Lord revealed to St. Faustina His desire to flood us with His graces on the Second Sunday of Easter. He told her, “On that day the very depths of my tender mercy are open. The soul that [with great trust in my mercy] will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punishment” (Diary 699). The great theologian Fr. Ignacy Rozycki explained that this is the promise of a complete renewal of baptismal grace, and in that sense, like a "second Baptism." How great is the Divine Mercy!
Plenary Indulgence
In addition, the Church has attached a plenary indulgence to Divine Mercy Sunday that may be applied to oneself or offered for souls in purgatory. The conditions for the plenary indulgence are:
Those who cannot attend church on the feast day due to a serious impediment may obtain a plenary indulgence on Divine Mercy Sunday if, totally detesting any sin and with the intention of fulfilling as soon as possible the first three conditions, will recite the Our Father and the Creed before a devout image of our merciful Lord Jesus and pray a devout invocation such as, “Jesus, I trust in you!”
If it is impossible that people do even this, on the same day they may obtain the plenary indulgence if with a spiritual intention they are united with those carrying out the prescribed practice for obtaining the indulgence in the usual way and offer to the merciful Lord a prayer and the sufferings of their illness and the difficulties of their lives, with the resolution to accomplish as soon as possible the first three conditions.
